Body of Work 2 8 and 11th November 2019

Weather - intermittent showers to torrential rain

Plan to start walking around the perimeter of the pit over a period of days tracking my route on an app. Collect 15 pieces of rubbish, photograph insitu, then photograph together in the environment. Today is a hard surface walk using ex-colliery railway line. How long do I need to walk to find 15 pieces? Will it always be the same distance? I left rubbish on the way there so I could record it on the way back and collect in a bag. I will creatively photograph on a drier day. (This map shows the distance required to find 30 pieces of rubbish and return journey so 1.75 miles for 30 pieces. Does the distance increase as the walk leaves the populated area?)

Research question
Do you see more litter in one direction than the other?
I'm not working with the turnip or the numerous dog poo bags.

This can be presented as typology. Personally I don't think it is creative enough for me but will be useful to record what I see.

11th November 2019
Heavy rain forecast later in the afternoon
I re-walked my first journey, stopping to photograph it in the environment.

First I laid out the rubbish in a circle. It didn't really show up but the light is quite flat. I was trying to show the environment too. I felt the leaves distracted it. I experimented with a wide angle lens and in landscape rather than portrait. This was the best image. I was undecided about it.

Next, I hung the rubbish in the tree. The packets kept blowing away in the wind. I liked this image but it didn't show enough environment.

After reviewing the images, I though perhaps the circle shape was maybe worth pursuing, and I was keen to try hanging a washing line and pegging the rubbish on it with wooden pegs. I liked the rubbish hanging on the trees. I recalled Liz Nicholls Rubber Band Project which was rubbish although I didn't view it like that at the time. I considered Alun Kirby's cyanotype project and wondered whether I needed to investigate alternative image making.

I collected a further 20 pieces of rubbish in a very short space of time. I took all the rubbish home and removed the glass bottles for disposal.

I made a couple of images to look at grouping items together:

I couldn't decide if the reason I did not gel with the typology images was the background, or if it was time to stop. I had come across Chloe Juno's work on Instagram and similar work, which tends to be a long running experiment. Was the rubbish all too similar? Nothing stood out for me. I felt it was probably time to stop exploring this avenue, and concentrate on photographing the rubbish collectively. I now had enough to present to the hangout group for peer feedback.
